Do You Really Need a First Look?
By Maddie · DMV Weddings & Events
A "first look" is a private moment before the ceremony where you and your partner see each other for the first time, just the two of you (and your photographers). Couples ask me all the time whether they should do one. The honest answer: there's no wrong choice — but here's what I'd want you to know.
The case for a first look
- A calmer timeline. Doing photos before the ceremony means you can knock out couple portraits, wedding-party photos, and often family photos early — so you're not missing your own cocktail hour.
- A private moment. Aisles are wonderful, but they're also very public. A first look gives you a quiet, unhurried moment together before the whirlwind begins.
- Nerves. For a lot of couples, seeing each other beforehand settles the jitters and lets them soak in the ceremony instead of shaking through it.
The case for waiting
- Tradition. If that first-glance-down-the-aisle moment is something you've always dreamed of, that's a completely valid reason to wait.
- The reveal. Some couples love the anticipation of not seeing each other all morning.
My take
Neither is "better" — it's about what feels right for the two of you. What I'll do either way is build your timeline around your choice so it flows beautifully, and make sure your photographer has the time they need. Whatever you pick, it's going to be a moment you remember forever.
